They played ten years in the American Football League before merging the league into the older NFL. During this time, Chargers reached the playoffs five times and played for the AFL championship for four times. They won their first title in 1963. This they accomplished by beating Boston Patriots at Balboa stadium in San Diego.
Sid Gillman was San Diego’s only coach for the ten year lifespan in AFL. He was voted into the hall of fame for his widely recognized offensive innovations. He was also the general manager. This he took up as Frank Leahy resigned due to poor health.
The most noted comeback by chargers was the one against Dallas. They came from 20-7 to 21-20 before a crowd of more than 17,000 people in the L.A Coliseum. American Broadcasting Company held the television rights.
